Solar Hot Water Collector Orientation

Solar Hot Water Collectors perform best when they are facing due south, but some leeway in azimuth heading is permissible. Usually the collectors are tilted at a steeper angle than solar electric modules in order to maximize the output of the collectors in winter, when less of the sun's energy is available. By increasing the tilt angle, the collector is more perpendicular to the sun's ray when the sun is lower on the horizon during winter months. A typical tilt angle for Solar Hot Water Collectors here in Central Pennsylvania is 45 to 55 degrees above horizontal.
